Automation with customX is part of the rebranding of Bothe-Hild GmbH and a milestone for the company's continued success.

More and more customers are requesting drawings of their future gate right from the quotation phase. This requirement could only be met with the help of a configurator. Bothe-Hild GmbH - www.dietorbauer.de - decided in favour of customX and is gradually automating its entire product range with the help of the configurator. Even after the first project phase, considerable time savings have been realized and the quality of the production documents has improved.

Targets

After customers increasingly requested drawings right from the quotation phase, it quickly became clear that automation was necessary. The aim was to introduce a configurator that not only assembles standard parts, but also checks dependencies and calculates variants.

Implementation

The "test winner" customX was introduced and the first product, which is now completely configured and designed using customX, was presented at the "Bau" trade fair. Bothe-Hild has now taken over the maintenance of the rulebook after the first prototypes were created by customX.

Conclusion

The time required to create documents, especially drawings, has been reduced from five to eight hours to just five to eight minutes. At the same time, the quality of the documents has increased; planning errors have been ruled out. The time saved can now be used for other important topics.

Five minutes instead of five hours

A gate is more than just a movable partition between inside and outside. It must fulfil a wide range of security requirements; it must fit in with the architecture and processes in the company - in short, it is a complete solution. Such solutions are supplied by the “Die Torbauer” (gate maker), which has developed into a leading manufacturer following the merger of the companies Bothe and Hild and the takeover by an investor. Around 95 employees in Herborn, Hesse, develop, design and manufacture sectional gates, folding gates, sliding gates, overhead folding gates, high-speed gates, roller shutters and roller grilles for all industries.

Customized products made from standard parts

Most gates are customized products that are designed and produced according to customer requirements. The components used are usually standard parts: profiles, suspensions, gate leaves, operators, etc. Even though modern 3D design software was used, it took around two weeks from receipt of the order to completion of all the drawings. However, more and more customers wanted the drawings right from the quotation phase, which was not possible with the existing processes.

How does automation work?

The development department analyzed the internal processes in order to automate the workflows wherever possible. A construction kit that allows standard parts to be assembled would not be enough. A configurator also needed to be intelligent enough to check dependencies and determine safe, buildable solutions.

Intelligent configurator sought

After two unsatisfactory tests, the gate manufacturers enquired with Man and Machine, the supplier of the 3D design software, and were introduced to customX. This software has the necessary intelligence built in: Rules and dependencies can be defined to ensure that the finished gate fulfils all requirements. "The thickness of the profiles, for example, depends on the width of the gate leaf," explains Denis Jehn, the development engineer responsible for the automation project. "As soon as the height exceeds a defined limit, the software automatically selects the next thickest profile."

The trade fair appearance

The world's leading trade fair "Bau" was the ideal platform to present the new branding "Die Torbauer" and the configurator at the same time. The new aluminium sliding gate, which will mainly be used on farms, is the first product that can be fully configured with customX.

Simple handling, perfect support

Implementing the design rules in the configurator is not rocket science, says Denis Jehn: "Anyone who can handle Excel macros will also be able to cope with customX." If there were any problems or queries, the customX team was on hand quickly and competently. "We made a few changes after the trade fair to optimize the design," says the development engineer. "But since October, the sliding gates have been entirely designed via the configurator."

Adopting further product groups

The rules for all products should be finalized within a good two years. “Die Torbauer” will benefit from the knowledge that was gathered when the rules for the first product group were drawn up: Much of what applies to sliding gates also applies to other gate types.

More time for important things

After configuration, customX supplies precise drawings, which can be handed over to the customer during the quotation phase. As soon as the order is placed, all production drawings can be output at the push of a button. The time required has been reduced from five to eight hours to just five to eight minutes.

Higher quality

The time gained can now be invested in the development of new products, and the company can take part in tenders and acquire new, attractive projects. At the same time, the gates are also getting better: Thanks to the rules, safety risks, such as the use of unsuitable profiles, have been eliminated. Quotation prices can be calculated more quickly and accurately, and the production drawings are so precise that even unskilled employees can install a gate correctly.

Ensuring the company's future

"Automation is an absolute must today," says Denis Jehn. "The configurator from Man and Machine is helping to ensure the continued existence of the company. And of all the solutions tested, customX is clearly the best." In future, dealers, and later even end customers, will be able to access customX via the web shop and configure the gates themselves according to their requirements.
